34 suspects remanded over lynching of Ghanaian Army officer

A court sitting in Accra, Ghana, has remanded 32 suspects including nursing women over the lynching of a senior Army officer.

34 people including 6 women with two of them being nursing mothers have been remanded in prison custody by an Accra Central District Court 3 over the gruesome lynching of a senior Military Officer, Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama.

CitiFM Online reports that the suspects were among the 42 arrested over the murder of the 32-year-old officer who was mistaken for an armed robber by residents of Denkyira Boase in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region.

Captain Mahama who was in line for a promotion to the rank of a Major, was lynched in the early morning of Monday, May 29, 2017, when he went jogging in the town a few days after he was posted there.

Captain Mahama, unfamiliar with the city, reportedly stopped a woman to ask for directions but the woman raised an alarm and residents of the town mistook him for an armed robber and subsequently stoned and burnt him to death.

While arraigning the suspects, the State Prosecutor, George Ameke, presented the facts of the case and prayed the court to remand the suspects until the next adjourned date of June 21, 2017.

Ameke said this would enable the prosecution to continue their investigations into the gruesome murder.
