Sad story of Delta Council Secretariat where weeds, reptiles rule [PHOTOS]

Image
The Ughelli South Local Government Council’s Secretariat has been overtaken by weeds and reptiles, leaving the Council in a sorry state, DAILY POST can report. A walk into the council leaves one suspicious of creeping objects for fear of not being bitten by snakes and other dangerous animals as grasses have overtaken some of the offices. Our Delta State Correspondent reports that the council’s infrastructures are also in deplorable condition. There are no furniture and no security gates with no official cars to run and manage the council. Staff scarcely come to work as they are allegedly being owed about thirteen months salaries. Delta State Governor, Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, in a town hall meeting, had allegedly said he owes no Salary of any Local Government Staff, urging Council Chairmen to fashion out ways to pay the staff.

Don’t accept back pain as you would accept grey hair on the head!

Image
It is very common nowadays for most elderly people to link ageing with back pain. A man found it difficult to coerce his 68 years father, who had prolonged pain in the lower back to attend a health facility for attention. He would say: “My son, don’t bother yourself about my back problem; it has been with me for decades and as I become older, I get more and more disabled, which accompanies the pain. It is the reward of old age.” Another had this to say: “My father and mother suffered this pain in the back for more than 20 years and they all died with it; so my case should not be different at my 70s. “Back pain is a price I know I have to pay for ageing. My father had it which made him to even bend over like the letter ‘C’ and it was never a major complaint while he lived. His complaint mostly was frequent urination.” Common back pain may metamorphose from acute to disabling chronic stage and when this occurs the victim gradually assumes a habitual poor posture, which bent towards t...

Is ‘Inflamm-Aging’ Eating Away Your Joints And Youth?

Image
Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent type of arthritis, a condition that tends to affect you as you get older. It occurs due to progressive deterioration of the cartilage and structural changes in the joints. These changes make it more difficult to function, along with causing discomfort and pain. Over the years physicians have often suggested osteoarthritis was simply a “wear-n-tear” issue. Now we understand it’s a disease of low-grade inflammation throughout the body’s cells — a term that scientists call “inflamm-aging” that equates to inflammation and aging. When this low-grade inflammation is present, a whole range of complex reactions occurs at the cellular and molecular level characteristic of premature aging. Two major factors driving this inflammation are conditions of altered metabolism, namely obesity and metabolic syndrome — a cluster of symptoms that includes high blood glucose, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, large waist circumference, and insulin resistance/dia...

The Frugal Way To Fight Aging

I know the idea of counting and/or reducing your calorie intake sounds like cruel and unusual punishment, but hear me out… Cutting calories has already been shown to reduce inflammation and increase your lifespan. And now, based on a recent study, it seems skimping on a few calories here and there could also replace those expensive anti-aging creams and pill bottles you’ve got sitting around the house… not to mention take a bite out of your grocery bill. If you’re thinking, “I’ve already heard about the anti-aging benefits of cutting calories, so what’s the big deal?” You’re right… at least in part. A lot of scientific studies have demonstrated the anti-aging powers of calorie restriction. But the thing is, most of these scientific studies have b...

A consultant and Head, Paediatric Cardiology an Infectious Diseases Unit, Department of Pediatrics, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof Christy Okoromah revealed that hypertension could affect a new born baby, especially premature and low birth weight babies (less than 2.5kg). Speaking during this year’s World Hypertension Day organised by Nestle in Lagos recently, Okoromah said aside newborns, children of all age range, up to adolescent (18 years) years could be affected by hypertension. She said that three to five percent of Nigerian children have hypertension, adding that this is higher than the rate for autism and paediatric HIV/AIDS. While explaining that congenital adrenal hyperplasia could cause hypertension in newborns, she said that, renal diseases, alcohol, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, medications/drug intake a...

The Only Vitamins You Actually Need On A Daily Basis

Image
If you’re a health nerd like me, you know the recommended nutritional guidelines are always changing. Remember when eggs were bad? Now it’s okay to eat them again. It can be hard to keep up with what’s healthy and what’s harmful, especially when it comes to vitamins. I’ll admit, as a nurse, I’ve always been a little leary of vitamin supplements. It just does not feel right that because supplement companies are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they can make wild health claims without proving their effectiveness or safety. We all have friends who swear by their vitamin routine. I often hear things like: “Now that I take vitamin C everyday, I don’t get colds anymore!” I can’t help but wonder if it’s the vitamin or merely the thought of doing something healthy that makes the difference. So if the research is always changing and companies can say whatever they like, what’s the average health-conscious gal to do? We went to the experts to find out some background ...

What Really Happens When You’re Low On Vitamin D

Image
As we’re (thankfully) nearing the end of winter, many people are expressing their gratitude at the impending return of more sunlight and vitamin D. If you’re like me and live in the higher latitudes far from the equator, you’ve probably been told more than once that it’s difficult to get enough vitamin D during the long, dark winters. Still, it came as a surprise to me this winter when after six weeks of being sick and exhausted, my doctor ordered a vitamin D test and it turned out my levels were very low. In fact, they were low enough to warrant a vitamin D prescription! This led me to wonder how common this is throughout the world and what kinds of symptoms might clue you in to the fact that you’re low on vitamin D. I spoke to doctors, dietitians, wellness experts, and fellow sufferers of low vitamin D to find out what really happens when your levels are low. What is vitamin D? First off, what is vitamin D and why does it matter? According to Dr. Scott Schreiber, a chiropractic p...

Image

What happens if they don’t love you back – will you lose their friendship? Get the answers to these questions and more. (The only answer I don’t have is whether or not they like you back. You’ll have to find that one out on your own.) 1. Make Sure You’re Sure You’re Really in Love There’s a difference between having a passing crush on someone and truly being in love. For instance, if: You’re on the rebound from another relationship Your friend is on the rebound and acting vulnerable Your friend got a new style and has been looking extra cute lately Your friend just started dating someone, and they’re spending less time with you Someone said that you and your friend would make a cute couple You and your friend became close only recently Then you might just have a temporary crush on your friend. Give it a couple of weeks and see if those feeli...

BREAKING: Great Tension In Aso Rock, As Acting President Osinbajo And House Of Reps Speaker, Dogara, Clash In Major War

Image
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on Thursday, has faulted the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, for saying that the National Assembly has no powers to alter the national budget. He stated this during plenary, after Rep. Abubakar Lawal, drew the attention of the Lower Chamber to Osinbajo’s remarks. Osinbajo was reported in the media, to have said that the power of appropriation was vested with the Executive and not the Legislature. Reacting, Dogara said: “This issue is left to the Judiciary to interpret to us, as to what arm of government has power to do what. For me, this is not an issue we should dwell so much on. “I don’t want to believe that the Acting President made that statement, because when it comes to the budget, the power of the purse rests with the Parliament. “The Executive is just one man; every other person in the Executive arm is answerable to the President alone. The relationship is that of master and servant, but for the Parliament, it is ...
